We practiced lent but the actual meaning of this time wasn't something that was focused on for us (children/teens) that I can remember. I remember it more as ... no soda or cookies for 40 days. And I was never able to make it 🤦🏻♀️.
That's the opposite of what we want people to take away from Lent! This kind of thing makes me so sad. We definitely don't want any children to think God wants them to give up stuff we like just because....Jesus. No wonder so many people drift away from faith in their adult life.
And to be honest... even as an adult, I am just now learning the true meaning Lent and I am 38! So thank you for this because I feel extremely behind in all of this lol.
Definitely don't feel behind, and without a doubt not because of your own doing. Sadly, so many people have received less than stellar formation and education as Christians. Faith is a journey, and we're all on it. To me, the journey of faith is realizing over time how much you really don't know, not how much you do know. So, count yourself in great company.
I feel like Lent is something that happened, but not something that was talked about seriously. Like it was just a mention that we should sacrifice like Jesus did and moving on. But maybe that was also because I was a kid/teen and I wasn't paying attention?
Here's an ice breaker question: did you practice Lent growing up?I didn't. My church tradition didn't practice Lent, so as an adult, it was a totally new practice to me. I look forward to the break it causes in life every year in the spring leading up to Easter.
